Dostoyevsky uses conformity to make Raskolnikov mentally ill and eventually turn himself in to face the punishment for his crimes. Religion influences every character in the book, but none more ardently than Raskolnikov. Understanding religion’s role as a force for conformity in Crime and Punishment provides a powerful insight into character motives and, furthermore, philosophical influences. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual’s employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment. Sexual harassment can occur in a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to the following:The victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man. The victim does not have to be of the opposite sex. In Oncale v. Sundowner, the US Supreme Court decided just this month unanimously ruling that same sex complaints are covered by the law. The harasser can be the victim’s supervisor, an agent of the employer, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a non-employee. The victim does not have to be the person harassed but could be anyone affected by the offensive conduct. Unlawful sexual harassment may occur without economic injury to or discharge of the victim. The harasser’s conduct must be unwelcome. It is becoming increasingly rare to find the traditional â€Å"quid pro quo† claim of sexual harassment. The current trend is that of a â€Å"hostile work environment† which can be much more difficult for the employer to address. The EEOC considers the following factors in determining whether or not an environment is sexually hostile:Whether the conduct was verbal or physical or bothHow frequently it was repeatedWhether the conduct was hostile or patently offensiveWhether the alleged harasser was a co-worker or supervisorWhether others joined in perpetrating the harassment, andwhether the harassment was directed at more than one individual. No one factor controls but an assessment is made based upon the totality of circumstances. II. Regarding EmployeesIt is helpful for the victim to directly inform the harasser that the conduct is unwelcome and must stop. However, a victim of harassment need not always confront his/her harasser directly, so long as his/her conduct demonstrates that the harasser’s behavior is unwelcome. The victim should use any employer complaint mechanism or grievance system available and, if that fails, contact the EEOC which makes a determination on a case-by-case basis. III. Regarding EmployersPrevention is the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace. Employers should take all steps necessary to prevent sexual harassment from occurring. An effective prevention program should include an explicit policy against sexual harassment that is clearly posted for the employees to read and be included in any in-service training programs. I heard on the news last week that a company was being sued even though they had a sexual harassment policy. The complainant didn’t feel that the company did enough to assert the policy. The employer should also have a procedure for resolving sexual harassment complaints. This procedure should encourage victims to come forward and should not require the victim to complain first to the offending supervisor, if that is the case. This procedure should ensure confidentiality as much as possible and provide effective remedies as well as protection from retaliation. IV. The primary AIDS virus is HIV-1, which can be spread via sexual intercourse or drug use (activities, which result in body fluid exchange like blood and semen). HIV can also be passed from mother to child and can also be acquired during blood transfusions. AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is a virus that causes a loss of protection against disease causing microorganisms. People who are infected by AIDS usually have a decline in the number of T-cells that are responsible for their immune system. Because the virus reproduces by a reversed transcriptase enzyme, it can quickly make a copy of its virus and so, it is difficult to treat with its infinite reproductions. However, scientists have now came up with a combination of drug called "cocktail drugs" to slow down the development of the virus in different life cycles. Introduction HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a disease that merits international concern, study, and research. The diseases that infect individuals over the world are causing theme to lose the functionality of their immune system and finally succumb to one or more opportunistic diseases. AIDS viruses are unbelievably small particles, invisible under an ordinary microscope, but observable with an electron microscope. All the viruses are tiny packets of genetic material, composed of either DNA or RNA and are surrounded by a protective envelope of protein. HIV belongs to a group of especially tricky viruses called retrovirus. It reverses the usual flow of genetic information within the host cell. Retroviral RNA is copied, using its reverse transcriptase enzyme, into a complementary single strand of DNA. This single-strand retroviral DNA is then copied into double-stranded retroviral DNA inside the cell's cytoplasm. This retroviral DNA migrates into the host cell's nucleus and becomes integrated into the host cell DNA. It is then a provirus. (Hyde & Forsyth, 1996) 1.0 Retroviruses 1.1 History There are two strains of HIV, HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is the more prevalent form and also the one that causes the greater pathology. HIV-2 is a lesser found strain that is endemic to countries in West Africa. Presently, the majority of those infected with HIV are infected with the HIV-1 strain. When the infection progresses, the patient is diagnosed with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The first well-documented case of AIDS was found in San Francisco and New York in 1981. A young gay man in San Francisco was found to be suffering from a severe fungal infection to which he had little immune reaction. In fact, his immune system did not appear to respond to any disease. Then he developed Pneunocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), a type of pneumonia that is caused by parasite. This disease is usually found only among severely malnourished individuals or people whose immune systems have been impaired by drugs such as those used in the treatment of cancer or in connection with organ transplants. The young man died by the end of the year. Retroviruses are classified into many different categories, but Lentivirus is responsible for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). (Armstrong, 1990) 1.2 T-Cells A characteristic feature of AIDS is the progressive decline in the number of circulating CD4 T lymphocytes . Various strains of HIV are cytopathic for cells from cultured CD4 cell lines suggesting that direct killing, among other mechanisms, may contribute to depletion of CD4 T-cells in HIV-infected persons. Cell killing may also be involved in other aspects of HIV pathogenesis, including the induction of neurological dysfunctions. The molecular events that mediate HIV-induced cytopathology have not yet been elucidated, although env gene products have been implicated by many lines of evidence. Studies funded in the previous years of this grant indicate that HIV, like several other cytolytic viruses, mediates changes in plasma membrane-associated ion transport systems. Scientists proposed studies focus on defining HIV proteins, which mediate the changes in ion flux. Their study found out that one of the HIV proteins may be involved is the transmembrane protein (TM). Among the regions of TM, there are carboxyl terminal sequences involved. These sequences have the potential to form a strongly amphipathic helix enriched in arginine, a motif shared with monovalent cation channels. In my opinion, â€Å"The Lottery† is a surprise and horror story. The film begins under a friendly atmosphere. The people in the village are close and familiar with each other. Before the lottery, everyone seems in a peace mind and friendly to each other. For instance, Mrs. Hutchinson arrives late, just with an excuse of â€Å"forgetting what day it was†. They talk to each other as usual give me a false impression that the lottery is an event similar as the square dance that is welcomed and festive. I expect that the winner of the lottery will receive a prize, money or something. Mr. Warner who was the eldest person in the town says with pride, â€Å"Seventy-seventh year I have been in the Lottery. † I always think the lottery is a pleasant event until the very moment Tessie screams when she sees her husband pick the black dot. The conclusion surprises me that the winner’s fate is death by friends and family. With this conclusion, the film becomes a horror story. Even someone doubts the lottery has been answered with â€Å"There has always been a lottery. † Even people may not be entirely comfortable with the event, but everyone still goes along with it. No one openly expresses fear or disgust toward the lottery. Even Tessie is friendly and pretending to be pleased to be present before she receives the black spot. I think if Tessie is not the target, she will also throw the stones to the winner. The film shows hypocrisy and human weakness in the small town. It is horrible when people always relying on the traditions, especially some brutal sacrificial ceremonies like the lottery. The holiday atmosphere and surprised conclusion of the lottery intensify the horror of the story. The horror of the lottery is not only the cruel behavior of the people, but also unconcerned reflection to the victim. They feel not guilt to the victim, and even excited when they throw the stones. Fahrenheit 451 and There Will Come Soft Rains Essay

A majority amount of stories may have a similar trait to another piece of writing. A large amount of stories have been compared in ways such as theme, settings, characters, irony, and close evidence of foreshadowing. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and â€Å"There Will Come Soft Rains,† by Ray Bradbury are an example of similar stories by sharing some of the same qualities. These two readings can be said to be identical in some ways by containing a common idea of negative effects of war and the value of the natural world but can be contrasted by being consisted of two different kinds of main characters. Fahrenheit 451 shows these aspects throughout the novel. In Fahrenheit 451 Mrs. Phelps says, Anyway, Pete and I always said, no tears nothing like that. It’s our third and we’re independent. Be independent, we always said. He said, if I get killed off, you just go right and don’t cry, but get married again, and don’t think of me. (Bradbury 95) This shows negative effects of war by saying that Mrs. Phelps shouldn’t cry if her husband is killed and needs to get married again and be independent like her and her husband always said. This can be compared to all the wives who lose their husbands in war and become widows. In Fahrenheit it shows the value of the natural world. This is shown when Faber says, â€Å"NO, no, it’s not books at all you’re looking for! Take it where you can find it, in old phonograph records, old motion pictures, and in old friends; look for it in nature and look for it in yourself† ( Bradbury 128). This shows that Faber values that natural and thinks everyone should look at it the way he does. Nature should be valued and many people take advantage of it in Faber’s opinion and even do it in today’s world. Fahrenheit’s main character is Montag and is demonstrated With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his solid head, and his eyes all orange flame with- the thought of what came next, he flickered the igniter and the house jumped up in gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. (Bradbury 3) Montag is the main character who is the firefighter who ignites homes if they contain any books. This seems very odd because in today’s society Fireman are supposed to stop fires and save lives not start them. These three points of comparison and contrast are also shown in Bradbury’s other story, â€Å"There Will Come Soft Rains.† The short story, â€Å"There Will Come Soft Rains† is similar to Fahrenheit 451 but readers can also see different aspects in both readings. â€Å"This house was the one home left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles† (Bradbury 615). Radioactive means that there was some type of nuclear weapon that destroyed the city. So the one home that was left became independent after everything was destroyed. Nature will live on even if man is gone and nothing is living on earth (Bradbury 615-617). This is shown by nature taking over this city after all men depart. All of the plants and trees are still living by themselves with no help from and will continue to grow on their own. â€Å"The house tried to save itself. Doors sprang tightly shut, but the windows were broken by the heat and the wind blew and sucked upon the fire† (Bradbury 618). The house was the main character because it was the only thing left in the city and was very significant. The house tried to save itself by fighting the fire and trying to stop it from burning it down just like our firefighters do today. Negative effects of war, value of the natural world, and main characters are all compared and contrasted in Fahrenheit 451 and â€Å"There Will Come Soft Rains.† Montag and the house were both the main characters from the different stories and could be said to be very different in many ways. Mrs. Phelps and her husband in Fahrenheit and the house in soft rains were both independent t and showed the trait of negative effects of war. The value of the natural world was shown in both stories by being mentioned many times and that people should real appreciate what it does for us and not take advantage of it. In the society of today, Americans dying and wives losing their husbands to violence in war is very visible and is a negative effect just as it is in both pieces of reading. In different eyes of readers these stories can be said to be similar and different in multiple ways.
